When speaking about the influence on contemporary art the first movement that comes to mind and also can be considered the most important is the bauhaus. The bauhaus was a school in Germany training graphic designers and arts in all fields of work. This movement is where all the previous works and techniques joined and it was founded by Walter Gropius. His ideas were to create a modernistic approach through machinery as they believed that this was the future, and they wanted to achieve this by combining illustration with craftsmanship. They also believed that less is more and that work should be true to it's materials, meaning wood should look like wood. Form follows function is also another rule that the Bauhaus invented, which means the design of something should be functional and not decorative, also the use of everything where and how it should be can be seen in many works such as highlighting time in red and the typography with a clear hierarchy. Graphic design in the Bauhaus focused mainly on typography, shape and colour and adapted modernism in it' works. Typography was bold and clear, we can see this from the works of Herbert Bayer in which he simplified the type even further. References Bauhaus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. 2014.
