In the early 20th century was a chaotic combination of new inventions and technologies and the change towards an urban culture. In 1909 in Italy Filippo Marinetti formed a group named the Futurists, these people wanted the changes and they wanted them to happen quickly. They rejected the traditional approach to art and design. They wanted to celebrate the new components of industrial society which included speed, machines, war and revolution. The work uses typography and energetic forms and depicting chaotic composition to communicate their idea of the new world. He wanted radical and violent change by shocking people into saying that he will destroy museums and referred to them as graveyards littering Italy. The futurists hated harmony and classical forms this can be seen in the design of Fortunato Depero in 1930. The design is very different and innovative when compared to the previous eras. They also created work where they used typography in order to create a painting, this can be seen in Carlo Carra's work in 1914. Although illegible the works show an energetic approach giving it a dynamic and moving form. In 1915 in Switzerland was gathering in opposition to WW1, unlike the Futurists who revered war these graphic artists were pacifists and responded to the horrors of war by creating the Dada movement.
