Jan Tschichold was one of the many typographers who was influenced by the Bauhaus in 1923 he visited an exhibition held by the Bauhaus which radically changed his style and approach towards typography. Before he used to create symmetrical and classical typefaces, he refined his techniques and released Die Neue Typographie, it promoted the opposite of traditional typography. He believed that it should never be decorative and it should be simple enough to relay information.Tschichold also wanted it to be assymetrical , dynamic and energetic which celebrated the machine rather than the human hand. Proportions were tied to the golden section and mathematical approach determined the placement of the layouts.Tchichold added a functional aspect which portrayed harmony and spiritual content. He used San Serif and believed that symmetrical layouts were not efficient as they forced the content into one form. Assymetrical layouts portrayed better hierarchy which leads to a better communication. He also favored photography as illustration was subjective. He used mostly primary colours in order to show a universal visual language.Negative space was also an important element which expressed a kinetic energy when compared to machinery. One can say that the new typography is more valued and relevant today than it was in 1923. References MoMA | The New Typography. 2015. MoMA | The New Typography.
