Paris in the late 19th century was full of optimism and excitement, peace and prosperity gave people more leisure time and allowed for expansions of all the different arts. La Belle Epoque also known as the Golden Age had limitation with printing and this created the woodtype poster. By the 1860's new inventions of printing had been released and therefore printing took another step towards creativity and freedom which included colours aqnd imagery with higher quality. Jules Cheret 1896 expanded on the typographic woodtype posters, he moved away from type only and included illustrations and a more painterly approach. The image contains exaggerating lighting and energetic movement to induce excitement and pleasure to the viewer. Many of the posters use an X-axis to maintain harmony and the colours are specifically chosen to make it seem artificial or stage lighting. Cheret also included the typography in his posters with hand drawn and painted letter forms, he presented women in a new and modern way, his figures were called Cherets and they showed the new attitude. Women in paris in the 1890's had less restrictions and Cheret showed this in his posters by drawing them in lower cut dresses and depicting a vibe of energetic dancing. In the same time period the flat forms and simplicity of Japanese woodblock prints influenced Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. In 1892 he took Cheret's approach of an image based poster but moved to more flat and simpler forms, his poster also use theatrical lighting and dynamic movement. Lautrec also included typography in his posters but it was less refined when compared to Jules Cheret. References Belle Époque - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. 2015.
