Alexander Rodchenko in 1925 amongst others created radical ideas also known as constructivism. These designers rejected the personal expression of fine art, they saw decorative and ornamental design as something which represents opression. Gustav Klutsis poster in 1928 is geometric and bold using the symbolism of the hand and shapes to convey a message rather then using an illustration. The typography is san serif this was used in order to reject the decorative fonts also the elements are tilted to portray forward movement and energy. El Lissitzky in 1919 created a poster used a vibrant red shape as a symbolism during the russian civil war. Also photography replaced illustrations, this was due to the fact that photography was better at depicting Machinery and Constructivism . They induced techniques such as photomontage and over printing in order to kill the idea of illustrations and hand made designs. They believed that graphic design was not a form of art and therefore there was no room for personal expression, it was considered an industrial manufacture. It was at this point that art shifted towards the function of something rather than simply the aesthetics. Simple tabs in posters might seem ordinary now but at that time it was something innovative. By the late 1920's the government demanded that design should be realistic and not abstract, this meant that graphic designers had to stop using photo montage and manipulation. They now considered the constructivists to be radical intellectuals.Due to this change and demand many artists moved to Germany and the United States.
